There’s not much need for a post as the No Cook Orange Play Dough infographic is pretty self-explanatory. But I guess I’d better write something!
I absolutely LOVE play dough. There’s just something satisfying about all that squishing, molding and pounding. No wonder it’s such a great tool for kids whether for fun or learning (should these words be separated? – I think not). I believe I’ll invent a new word that makes fun and learning inseparable. Ready for it?
Flearning!
Hmmm… I think I like it! Flearning to count, flearning to read, flearning to sing and dance. For an excellent alphabet and play dough learning station check out this DIY alphabet tools post.
Perhaps flearning will be the basis of my next blog post!
Step 1: Mix These
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp cream of tartar
Step 2: Mix These
1 cup hot water
1/2 tsp orange essential oil
Food colouring
We used yellow and red to create orange. It looks alarmingly red in the water but it turned out the lovely orange you can see.
Step 3: Mix A and B
Make a flour well (kids love to do this) and pour in the liquids (adults do this). Stir and then knead it. Before giving it to the kids make sure there are no hot spots in the play dough.
Woo hoo… we’re ready to go!
To start with you might like to download these super cute (and free) transport mats for play dough and driving.
If, after kneading it, the play dough seems too wet add a little more flour. If it seems too dry add a little more oil!
Step 4: Time for Fun + Learning
Grab a copy of this No Cook Orange Play Dough recipe so you can print it out and use it with your kids!
Remember when you and your kids are done flearning… that is, having fun and learning at the same time… wrap the dough in cling wrap so it stays moist for next time.

Could you tell me what orange oil is? I can not locate this at our stores
Liz says
Hi Sara,
The orange oil I used is a pure essential oil that I bought at the chemist (in Australia that’s where we buy medications, beauty & hair products etc). I’d better write that into the recipe! Orange essential oil is not as common in our stores as other oils so if you can’t find it I suggest adding finely grated orange peel instead. I’m not sure how long it will keep with real orange peel in it but the kids will love adding it! Let me know if you have other questions and good luck with the recipe!

Thank you so much for this! I have an intervention pull-out (Special Education) and have been rotating a weekly sensory bin. This recipe will be perfect! I found orange essential oils at Michael’s this summer.
Thanks again, Jen

I have a bit of a citrus thing going on at the moment. I bought 4 trees yesterday to plant along my back fence – lemon, lime, mandarin and orange. I’ll have to think of some educational uses for them!
