Learning to separate out the beginning and ending sounds of words is one of those important bridging skills between knowing the alphabet (and its sounds) and starting to read. I hope your children enjoy these free transportation-themed clip it cards!
Why practice ending sounds?
It’s great to know the alphabet, but the alphabet alone doesn’t give us all the clues we need for reading and writing… particularly if we know the letter names but not their sounds!
Children need to develop phonemic awareness in order to read and write well. Phonemic awareness means understanding that words are made up of individual sounds (called phonemes). When those individual sounds are strung together they create a word.
Some children struggle with separating out sounds, and all children can do with some practice, so we often ask children to:
- Find the beginning sound of a word (one of the first tasks)
- Find the ending sound of a word (after gaining some competence with the first task)
- Find the middle sound of a 3-letter word (after finding some success with 1. and 2.)
What you need
- Download these Ending Sounds Transportation Clip It Cards.
- Print the colour or black and white pages onto card, then cut to separate the cards and laminate them if you’d like.
- Grab some tiny pegs or paperclips, or just some small objects to place on top of the chosen letter.
How to use these ending sound clip it cards
Children look at a picture, say what it is, then decide which sound is the last they hear in that word. Then they clip that letter with a peg or a paper clip, or pop a small object on top.
Please note: I have included both i and b with the taxi cab picture as children call it by different names depending on where they live. However, ‘i’ is problematic because it sounds like ‘ee.’ However, since the word TAXI is often printed on them and kids can see them on the streets this can make it a more familiar word, depending on where you live.
