How to prepare
Print off the puzzles you want to use onto card, cut the pages in half and then cut each puzzle into strips.
How to use these puzzles
The intention of these puzzles is to help kids gain confidence in recognizing how the short vowel in a CVC word becomes a long vowel when an e (we call it a magic e) is added to the end of the word. It then becomes a completely new and (usually) unrelated word.
The strip between the CVC and CVCe puzzles provides a visual break between the two and also has pictures to represent the short and long vowel sounds. These act as prompts for children who need reminders about the sounds of these letters.
- short a: ant long a: ape
- short i: ink long i: ice
- short o: off/on long o: ok
- short u: up long u: unicorn
