Pronouncing two consonant sounds at the beginning of a word can be tricky, so we encourage kids to learn about beginning blends and practice sounding out those words. These beginning consonant blends clip cards can help little ones practice!
Consonant blends
Some words start with two or three consonants that are pronounced in a way that blends the sounds. That is, we smoothly progress from one sound to the next. They don’t become one sound as in ch, sh or th… they maintain their own sound but they’re well blended.
Getting ready
- Print these pages onto card, cut them to separate and laminate if you wish.
- Use the last page as a reference.
- Grab some small pegs or paper clips and you’re ready to go!
Using these beginning consonant blends clip cards
Children look at the letters in the centre and pronounce the word blend. They then look at the pictures, say what they’re called and decide whether they begin with the same blend.
They then:
- EITHER clip the clothespin to the picture that does NOT match
- OR to the three pictures that DO match.
