The Washington cherry blossom festival
Washington has thousands of cherry trees planted around the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park, Hains Point and on the Washington Monument grounds. Every spring over a million visitors come to the festival. If you want more information here’s their official website.

- In 1912, as a sign of friendship,
- Japan sent 3000 cherry trees to America.
- The first tree was planted by the First Lady, Helen Taft*,
- along the north bank of the Tidal Basin. (*The Japanese Ambassador’s wife, Viscountess Chinda, planted the second tree.)
- Each spring over a million people visit to see the cherry blossoms
- around the Capitol and Memorial buildings.
- They remind us of friendship and the beauty of life.
