Teachers use the term – Magic E words – to describe long vowel words that have ‘Magic E’ at the end. The magic happens by changing the sound of the first vowel. For example, the word ‘can’ has a short ‘a.’ If we add the Magical E at the end the word changes to ‘cane.’ The short a sound is now a long a sound.
These puzzles will give your kids practice with 8 Magic E words!
Magic E Words
The words included in this pack are: bake, cake, dive, time, home, hose, cube and dune.
They’re in both colour and black and white!
Preparation
Print off the puzzles you want to use onto card and cut them into strips.
Using these puzzles
The pictures make these puzzles fairly easy to put together so much of a child’s focus can be directed towards the sounds.
Encourage children to say the sounds as they put the puzzles together, with a finger pointing at each letter, when complete. Because these are Magic E patterns, have children sound out the first vowel as a short vowel (for eg, ‘gat’) and then when the e is added change it to a long vowel sound (eg, ‘gate’) to reinforce the change the final e makes.
