How many kids know that people used to write with feathers? Today’s art project is to make and paint a feather quill. It’s a super opportunity to chat about past forms of communication and how much easier it is today to stay in contact with our friends and family. In our current world of instant communications it’s good to get little ones thinking about how they would pass messages and write stories without iPads and computers, or even pencils and pens.
What you’ll need!
- 1 feather – the larger the better! (Turkey feathers are popular)
- Tempera paint or finger paint
- Scissors
- A paperclip
- Small paintbrush
- Watercolour (for writing/drawing with your quill)

What would we do if all our computers imploded today? Any comments?
I hope you enjoy this project and wish you happy teaching and learning!
